We know what you’re thinking: “Sure, Fairbanks is beautiful and everyone dreams of living in Alaska, but can you actually make a living there?” The answer is yes!

Opportunities Abound
Fairbanks unemployment averages are consistently lower than Alaska’s average. The bulk of our jobs fall within service-producing sectors and government. Retail Trade, Education and Health Services, and Leisure & Hospitality are leading employers within the private sector. Fairbanks’ growing importance as a regional hub for Interior villages, the Federal Government (especially the U.S. Army and Air Force) as well as for the state, make government positions plentiful here.

Income Statistics
Per capita income for the Fairbanks North Star Borough has steadily risen since the late 1990s, with an average monthly wage in 2001of $2,785.00. This trend is expected to continue as Fairbanks expands its participation in new economic projects within the natural resources, U.S. security, and technology fields*.

Starting Your Own Business
Thinking of starting your own business or moving your existing business to Fairbanks? Consider consulting with
Fairbanks Economic Development Corporation, the Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce, the Alaska Small Business Development Center, or the State's Department of Community and Economic Development.
